These pools that, though inforests, still reflect

The total sky almost withoutdefect,

And like the flowers besidethem, chill and shiver,

Will like the flowers besidethem soon be gone,

And yet not out by any brookor river,

But up by roots to bring darkfoliage on.

The trees that have it intheir pent-up buds

To darken nature and besummer woods --

Let them think twice beforethey use their powers

To blot out and drink up andsweep away

These flowery waters andthese watery flowers

From snow that melted onlyyesterday.
